One axiom of expedition photography is that some of the best pictures are ones you are too tired, busy or scared to take. After spending six weeks climbing the 4,000 north face of Great Sail Peak on #Baffinisland, north of the Arctic Circle in #Canada, I was slogging down talus back to base camp under an eighty pound pack, with no intention of stopping. When I turned around and spotted this midnight #sunset, my first reaction was "Oh no, I have to shoot this." Just dropping the pack was a struggle, but technically the picture was an even tougher head-scratcher. To get both the #saxifrage #flowers and the mountains in focus and properly lit, I had to makeshift a "tripod" from pebbles, attached a graduated neutral density filter, stop down to f/22 at 1/2 second and use my self timer to minimize shake. The whole process took over an hour. It was worth the effort, though, and appeared as a lead photo in a December, 1999 National Geographic Magazine story called "Hitting the Wall." #mountains #arctic #nunavut
