We mark time with numbers. Time didn't show up with numbers. We assigned them this continuum of existence to make sense of universe. On an individual level, time and numbers take on special meaning. The day we are born, the day we share vows and, as climbers, the days we are lucky enough to reach a summit. Perhaps we recognize the date and time of our own death as our last thought.

We attach significance to the death of people close to us. Our friends, the community and, with the greatest sorrow, our family members are dates we remember. For those that pass within in the realm of biological succession - age - we celebrate their accomplishments. We compliment them on a life well lived. For those that leave young, we are left with a sense of loss - the potential of life cut short.
14 years ago today the 5th of October 1999 my best friend Alex Lowe died in an avalanche on the Tibetan peak, Shishapangma. We were swept away by a massive wall of snow and air. In a twist of fate I survived. I'll never know why.

The energy and exuberance Alex radiated still alive. His spirit is a guiding light and we cherish the moments his motivation touches us.

A mid-day work out between showers during a post monsoon attempt on Annapurna III in 1996 captures his energy. Making the most of every day, getting a little extra in and pushing himself and those around him to be their best.
