27 years ago, nuclear fire burned for 11 days in Chernobyl, the site of the world’s worst nuclear accident. The area around the plant, known as the Exclusion Zone, remains a toxic wasteland most of the world dares not visit. Yet, a community of about 200 people, most of whom are women, have chosen to stay illegally in Chernobyl’s “Dead Zone.” In today’s #TEDTalk, Holly Morris introduces the Babushkas of Chernobyl. For these resilient settlers, Chernobyl is home, and the connection they have with their ancestral land and community outweighs their fear of radiation.
