Photo by @pedromcbride (Pete McBride). "It is like walking the back of a dinosaur," said @mountainworld traversing the summit ridge of Mt. Kenya's Batian Peak at 17,018 feet. Climbing this second highest peak in #Africa involves a challenging multi-pitch route with perilous rock fall and mixed ice. More challenging is Kenya's changing water situation. Mount Kenya used to have 11 glaciers. By 2050 it is predicted there will be none on this equatorial peak. That will change water patterns downstream for the orchestra of 7 million water users like rose farmers and elephant populations. I was lucky to climb the false summit on this mountain with my family when I was 9. Last summer, I returned to see if I could summit Batian. Seeing first hand the extreme glacier loss shocked me. For those in the Bay Area this Thursday, Nov. 21, my film "The Water Tower" a short doc. about this climb and the #glacier loss, plays in Mill Valley as part of the #TellurideMountainFilmFestival. @natgeocreative
