Ever wonder how you capture coral sperm? Wonder no more. Spawning once a year for only for one night in the darkness of the evening hours, there is a very brief window to collect samples. Using procedures similar to those used in human sperm banks, Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute research scientist Dr. Mary Hagedorn and her team are freezing coral sperm and stem cells. That genetic material could be used hundreds of years from now to repopulate the ocean with corals if they go extinct. Corals support a quarter of all life in the oceans. But due to pollution and climate change among other threats they are in trouble. Dr. Hagedorn and her team are trying to bank as many species of coral as they can. #WeSaveSpecies #Corals @スミソニアン博物館
