For the fans expecting more 'exotic' food fair from the @djneilarmstrong asia #FRTakeover, this will be my 'bizarre foods' post. At these temples strewn across Kyoto Japan, there are many stores and food stalls lining the streets leading to the shrines. At the Fushimi Inari temple, you can find these offerings of grilled quail and kabayaki (eel), covered in this kind of sweet soy sauce glaze, giving them this nice balanced sweet and savory coating.
These are not uncommon to get back home, really not that bizarre. Lots of folk go quail hunting back in the states, and eel (aka unagi) is often offered at your average Asian/Japanese fusion restaurant back in the states.
What might be jarring is the presentation. I don't think most folk are used to seeing these animals in their state of cooking. With the quail they leave the head on as well as the eel.
