Wandering the grand, brooding sanctuary of St. Magnus Cathedral again. One of my favorite places in the island town of Kirkwall, Orkney. This hulking Viking cathedral commemorates the St. Magnus who martyered himself in a suitably grisly style. Look up the story. These graveslabs lining the walls carry a suitably dour message: be not proud, we all shall pass. Dust to dust and all that. I love them for this stark honesty. Have spent a lot of time in Orkney these past two years working on assignment for National Geographic, an archeology story that will appear in the August 2014 issue. Am experimenting with the new #Cinamatic app from @hipstamatic that does some interesting video effects. I find I have to do several versions of the 15 second take till I get the transitions right.
