Today in 1972: President Nixon signs the Higher Education Act, including the Title IX gender discrimination ban. It protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs and activities that receive federal funding.
It impacted the career of tennis player Billie Jean King, who wore this in her famous exhibition match against male competitor Bobby Riggs known as "The Battle of the Sexes." King was the first female tennis player to win more than $100,000 in a season, yet male players made three times as much. Infuriated by the injustice, she and other top women players called for a boycott. The move led to the creation of the first tennis tour for women.
