This canopy is made of thermo-bimetal, a material that responds to heat much like human skin. The holes in the canopy have flaps over them that curl up in the heat, allowing air to pass through for ventilation. In areas hit by direct sun, the metals flatten out to create shade. This makes the structure highly energy efficient. Architect and biologist Doris Kim Sung says, “When there's a power outage, and you have no electricity to rely on, these thermo-bimetals will still be working tirelessly, efficiently and endlessly.” To see a time-lapse of thermo-bimetals in action go to on.ted.com/bimetals
