A pre-Islamic people, Nabataeans carved palatial tombs at Madain Salih some 3000 years ago. Today they stand in near pristine condition in the desert of Saudi Arabia. The Nabataean inhabited most of this region stretching from Petra in present day Jordan, all the way to Madain Salih. In 106 CE, the Nabatean kingdom was annexed by the Romans due to their lucrative trade routes.

July 1 heralds the arrival of Part II of the Out of Eden project, this latest installment is on Saudi Arabia where Paul Salopek and I traveled throughout the Hejaz region last October/November. Story is aptly titled "The Wells of Memory". There's an extended photo essay of my work on this page. If you're in the Berkshires of Western MA, stop by my gallery (Stanmeyer Gallery & Shaker Dam Coffeehouse) for signed copies of this months National Geographic magazine.
