A cliffside #montanamoment on our canoe trip. The Upper Missouri River in #Montana is one of the best canoe trips in the Unites States and a well kept secret. It runs for 149 miles through a spectacular canyon incised into the prairie country of central Montana. Up river from where we set off is "Decision Point", where Meriwether Lewis and William Clark found the confluence of the Missouri River with the Marias River.

They now faced a crucial question: Which river was the Missouri? Their entire party felt that they should follow the Marias River while Lewis and Clark decided continuing along the Missouri was the correct route. The captains noted that the south fork was clearer, smoother, and more rapid, and its bottom was "composed of round and flat smooth stones like most rivers issueing from a mountainous country."
