Photo @Cory Richards Ice skates...a personal effect...left to the whims of time. When Krenkle Station on Hayes Island in Franz Josef Land was abandoned, lives and memories were suspended, arrested histories left in place to tell stories when anyone was ready to listen. Of all the images I took on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック in the lonely archipelago 800 miles north of the Arctic Circle, the ones from Krenkle are the most haunting. They are human portraits without the presence of humans...ghost pictures. Sometimes the biggest human stories are told are through a portrait of our impacts rather than images of us.
