200 years ago today: DC goes up in flames as the British attack.
But wait... what about the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution? How'd they survive the fires? A few speedy clerks stuffed these important records (plus the military papers of George Washington) into linen bags and fled to Leesburg, Virginia, about 35 miles outside of Washington.
These important documents remained locked in a cellar until it was safe to bring them back to the city.
