Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894. This photograph from over ten years later documents the inhumane and dangerous working conditions to which children were exposed in the workplace. Lewis Hine photographed this young boy working at a loom in a cotton mill in Rhode Island and shared the photo with the National Child Labor Committee.
Hine's work was instrumental in bringing about child labor laws and raising safety standards in the American workplace.
Do you think photo journalism is still a force for change today, now that many people have camera phones? #laborday #journalism
