The last remaining tower at the Fredrick Douglass Homes (more commonly known as the Brewster-Douglass housing project) stands partially razed in Detroit, Michigan. Demolition of the abandoned projects will open 18 acres for redevelopment just north of downtown Detroit. Motown stars such as Diana Ross and the Supremes grew up in the Brewster-Douglass projects.
A task force charged with studying blight in Detroit found that over 78,000 buildings are dilapidated or on their way to becoming so. That is 30 percent of the city's structures in a metropolis that was once home to 1.85 million people, but now has around 700,000 residents. The Detroit Blight Removal Task Force recommended the city spend $850 million to tear down decaying buildings and also stated that dealing with Detroit's abandoned factories could cost an additional $1 billion to salvage or demolish the industrial sites.
Detroit’s economic collapse forced the city to file for bankruptcy in July of 2013, the largest municipal bankruptcy in US history. Photo by Danny Wilcox Frazier @dannywilcoxfrazier on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック
