Shannon is one of many seasonal workers who come to Yellowstone to work on a lake trout suppression project. The larger lake trout were introduced to the lake some time in the late 80's and their arrival has been devastating to the native cutthroat trout - who are often on the lake trout's menu. Shallow water cutthroat support an important eco-system as they are food for species such as bald eagles, ospreys and otters. Lake trout are deep water fish and so out of reach to predators. The National Park now runs a netting scheme to reduce lake trout numbers. Cutthroat are sometimes caught in the fishing nets but when one is, it is carefully removed and 'burped' before being released.
