I was honored to stand up and speak at the #lungforce walk in Albuquerque yesterday. I did it to give back and honor the life of my Grandmother Doris Dooyema... This is part of the speech I gave. I wrote a letter to cancer hoping that by doing so we could all try to make sense of loss, find meaning and see some hope. After all my grandmother never lost hope as she courageously fought for her life... She always looked at me with determined eyes saying "it is what it is!" I miss you granny thanks for being my example everyday! Dear cancer, I'm Shantel VanSanten unfortunately you're aware we have met. The circumstances weren't the best. See you took away the life of someone who made this world a better place. Our acquaintance has left a hole in my heart which no amount of time seems to heal. But I'm not the only one, there are many of us whos lives have been affected by you. We all are seeking to understand, searching to see a way through the pain, and trying to make sense of loss. We have so many questions and yet we are all struggling for meaning in your presence. You may feel like you have the power over us but we see your limits. You cannot suppress our memories or silence are courage. You cannot invade our souls are shatter hope. You cannot cripple our love and most of all you cannot conquer our spirits. You may think all you have given us is grief but really you have given to each of us a newfound gratitude, for each breath, every moment, all our experiences, each and every day. In the end we are victorious .. you have brought us together to celebrate our loved ones and We stand here United fighting against you, knowing with all our hearts someday there will be a new C word to take your place forever... Cured! And when all is said and done we will be the ones standing strong and we will say to you "it is what it is!"
