Photo by @chrisbickford. Autumn in the Holler. Depending on where you live, autumn may or may not have reached its peak by now. On the ridges and hollows of central Tennessee, the foliage peaked about five days ago. A night of rain gave way to a foggy morning, which burned off into the last, most glorious day of high autumn. Fresh with precipitation, the leaves gave off one last burst of technicolor brilliance before the cold winds came and the frost of Hallow's Eve tightened winter's grip on the land. What it is about autumn leaves that stirs the soul I don't know, but I know it's something stronger than a mere pageant of color. It's more like an ancient natural rite, simultaneously boding the coming of winter and promising the return of spring. It is no wonder that so many traditional cultures hold ceremonies this time of year. Halloween, Samhain. La Dia de Los Muertos, Tsukimi, ...In lieu of an ancient ritual, many of us make pilgrimages to the mountains, to see, feel, and photograph the autumn transformation. Here is a relic from my own little pilgrimage, a small scene from the holler with the last traces of morning fog still lingering on the ground. Photo by @chrisbickford. #autumnintheholler #tennessee
