Happy birthday to Lazar Markovich Lissitzky, better known as El Lissitzky (1890–1941). A prolific member of the Russian avant-garde, he worked in various modes and media—everything from Suprematist painting (with his mentor Kasimir Malevich), to theoretical architecture, to an inventive approach to typography that influenced twentieth-century graphic design.
