An aerial view of East Pass, an inlet connecting Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf of Mexico on the Florida Panhandle, bordering the vacation town of Destin. Jetties on both sides of the pass keep the inlet from shifting or closing, but from the sky the strong tidal interplay of sand, water, and sediment between bay and gulf is readily apparent. This stretch of beach, on the far western edge of the Panhandle, is known as the Emerald coast; judging from the crystalline blue-green quality of the water, it's easy to see why.
