Photo by @ChrisBickford on assignment for @NatGeoTravel in #FloridaWild. A view of Cape St George Light at dawn. What is it about lighthouses that holds such allure for us in an era when they are no longer necessary for maritime navigation? Perhaps we are attracted to their symbolic functions as beacons in the darkness, showing us the way to safe harbor through difficult times. Perhaps we identify with their structure: their tall, straight lines, their oculus surveying the territory around, their defiance of the elements against which humans struggled throughout time. A lighthouse remains steady, strong, and reliable while the world of weather changes dramatically around it. Not even lighthouses are impervious to the worst of nature's fury, however; in 2005 the St. George Lighthouse collapsed from the cumulative damage of Gulf Coast storms. Friends of St George Light gathered up the broken pieces, moved them to a more protected area, and rebuilt the old beacon. While its new position behind a row of sand dunes in the heart of the village of St George is less dramatic than its old spot at the edge of the sea, it is now safe for climbing, viewing the island and the sea, and enjoying during a walk on the beach at night, its flashing light guiding our way back to the cozy hospitality of the village. #Love FL #stgeorgelighthouse #lighthouse @chrisbickford #onassignment @natgeocreative @sharealittlesunshine @visitflorida.
