Photo by @mike_hettwer - When large ships are too old, no longer seaworthy or too expensive to operate, they are "broken" on the beaches of some of the poorest countries in the world. Like other of the largest man-made objects and machines, ships need to be disposed of. In Bangladesh it’s done in a particularly dangerous way for both workers and the environment. Barefoot workers drag out a steel cable that weighs over 10,000 pounds to winch off a section of the ship during low tide and bring it back to shore. The mud contains heavy metals, steel shards, asbestos and other dangers. This story was published in the May 2014 National Geographic magazine. The shipbreaking video has been seen by 400,000 people and can be viewed on the Nat Geo YouTube channel - Where Ships Go to Die, Workers Risk Everything . #shipbreaking #shipbreakers #shipbreaker #bangladesh @petergwin @mike_hettwer
