Photo by @amivitale. Patients wait for medical attention in one of the communities neighboring the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (@lewa_wildlife). Through collaboration with #Lewa, a volunteering team of doctors from MEDCAN clinic in Toronto have been able to attend to patients suffering from a variety of diseases and ailments.
Lewa runs 4 clinics in the neighboring areas serving over 20,000 people. Since inception, the Conservancy has realized the best way for communities to participate in wildlife conservation is through development. As a result, Lewa supports 20 schools, 4 health clinics, 10 water projects and over 800 women in their micro-credit program, directly improving the lives of over 50,000 people. These communities are strategic partners in conservation and the people have become the first line of defense against instigators of wildlife crimes, greatly contributing to the success of its endangered species conservation programs.
I am here in #Kenya documenting the work of conservancies like @lewa_wildlife @NRT_KENYA @NATURE_africa @nature_org & @olpejeta working hard to provide a safe and secure habitat for wildlife in northern Kenya while promoting development of the communities too.
