Today isn't the earliest sunrise -- the variation in the solar day throughout the year is caused by the Earth's elliptical orbit. In the northern hemisphere, the earliest sunrise happens within the first weeks of December.

But today is the shortest day of the year. And for this reason it's my favorite day. From now on days get longer. Whoopee!
