Today in 1863: President Abraham Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring that all persons held as slaves in states still in rebellion were "thenceforward, and forever free." In summer 1862, President Lincoln spent time at the telegraph office waiting for news from the front. While there, he began to pen the first draft of his Emancipation Proclamation, borrowing the desk and this brass inkwell of Major Thomas T. Eckert.
