Photo by @shonephoto (Robbie Shone) - This sculptured limestone wall at the southern entrance of Deer Cave in Borneo displays an uncanny resemblance to Abraham Lincoln. Every evening (almost), approximately 3 million wrinkled-lipped bats fly out of Deer Cave, forming a fantastic spectacle of giant swarming clouds as they go. Tourists aren't the only creatures waiting for 'the flight'. Hawks and peregrines circle overhead, they swoop and prey on the bats. Together, it is estimated that the bats consume about 15 tonnes of mosquitoes, moths and small beetles per night, which is then excreted as guano inside the cave, and upon which a whole ecosystem of cockroaches, beetles, other insects, centipedes and spiders survives.
