Today the National Zoo had a special visitor, the @WashingtonNationals racing presidential mascot, Teddy Roosevelt. While at the National Zoo, Teddy stopped by our American bison exhibit. Bison were virtually wiped out at the end of the 19th century. Zoo founder William Temple Hornaday began the American Bison Society with Theodore Roosevelt as its honorary president. Under their leadership, the ABS set out to preserve and increase bison populations in the United States. Their efforts helped save this iconic American species from extinction.
