In 1886 Col. Jess Driskill spent his fortune to build the Driskill Hotel, which he planned as the finest hotel south of St. Louis. Times were not good for the Colonel and legend says he lost the hotel in a poker game in 1888. After more than a century of ups and downs, the hotel still stands as one of Austin's most iconic sites.
