This is Mary Lincoln's purple velvet skirt and daytime bodice. It is believed to have been made by African American dressmaker Elizabeth Keckly. After Abraham Lincoln’s death, Mary went into mourning and remained in widow’s clothes until her own death in 1882. She gave this gown to a cousin.
Watch tonight's commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's assassination live from Fords Theatre at 9 ET: http://bit.ly/nhbtta (clickable link in profile)
