Photo by: @hiddenwwi | Found in a small cave in an obscure location adjacent to a World War I front line French trench, this carving by a French soldier was made in September, 1917 when French army morale was very low. Not far from here, French troops were put to death on the order of French Generals as a deterrent to widespread mutiny and refusal to fight after the failure of French troops to prevail during a major offensive. Only five years before, the Titanic, said to be unsinkable, sunk after striking an iceberg in the Northern Atlantic. The Titanic became a symbol of the dark side of modern progress. WWI was the world’s first modern mass destruction and the first time that the dark side of modern progress revealed itself on a massive scale.

The carving says “The sun of my youth is setting”, “liberty is leaving the world”, and “the disasters of the 20th Century”. Getting into the cave where this carving is found was challenging. It is located in a red zone where the land remains so deformed from bomb craters that a century after WWI it is unusable. Access to the cave required sliding through a small hole only big enough for one’s body. The camera gear had to be passed, one piece at a time, through the hole. There was no room for a tripod. The camera had to be balanced on my knee while photographing in complete darkness.
