In #Diyarbakir, Turkey, a Turkish-Armenian girl lights candles during an Easter #Mass at the Sourp Giragos Church, the largest #Armenian church in the Middle East. In recent years, the local Kurdish authorities helped restore the church. It has since become a center for Armenians who were raised to believe they were Muslim and Kurdish and are just now discovering their family roots. Nearly 1.5 million Armenians died at the hands of the Ottoman Empire in 1915 during World War I. @bdentonphoto went looking for photos that symbolized the event, which is not widely discussed in #Turkey. “I didn’t want to make busy pictures,” he said. “I wanted to make pictures that people stopped and looked at.” We will publish more of his photos from the story today. #nytweekender
