Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Now in complete darkness under a French farm field in Picardy, and very close to the former front line of WWI, this Jewish chapel made by French WWI soldiers is the only surviving example of a Jewish place of worship from The Great War. In the same WWI underground city are two magnificent Catholic chapels. Each of the three chapels in this underground city are places of remarkable tranquility, even today. The underground quarry in which this is located predates WWI by centuries. The stone blocks used to build castles, cathedrals, fortresses and homes were mined from places like this. During WWI they were rapidly converted into modern underground cities with rail, power stations, telephones, hospitals, food and sanitation systems and theaters. An abundance of original art carved by the soldiers remains on the walls today. The largest underground city I’ve encountered is 41 kilometers underground in a single place. Some had street signs to prevent soldiers from getting lost. It’s hard to imagine that places like this still exist that are unknown to the outside world and not on the internet. Just by being curious and willing to travel to remote locations, one can still find many, many cultural treasures that are hidden in plain sight. These hidden places are also hopeful places that can tell us much about who we are as modern people, can help us breakthrough modern numbness and inspire hope for the future.
