Prairie Rebirth: America’s last great Tallgrass Prairie endures in the Flint Hills. Here the prairie grasses still dominate the rolling hills, a scene lost in most places on the Great Plains a century ago. That they endure here is the gift of geology (the hills were too rocky to plow) and that the grazing has made a rich ranching tradition possible. I shot this on assignment for National Geographic Magazine. For the past several days I've featured the annual spectacle fire in the Flint Hills during the spring burn, the resulting death and beautiful rebirth of spring.
