In April, 2012 I was on a 6 week journey photographing the Hidden Worlds of WWI but I was not aware that there were underground cities adjacent to the former front line trenches of WWI in which tens of thousands of soldiers on both sides lived and worked. A bureaucrat inside the French Ministry of Defense introduced me to government officials all along the Western Front. My last stop was on this 6 week journey was in Picardy to meet a local government official but I almost cancelled because I could not find anything on the internet that would justify spending time photographing this area. But it turned out that the Hidden Worlds of WWI underground was not on the internet!
That official, who is now a very close friend, took me to the first underground city I’d ever seen. It was in a remote rural area next to a farm field. In this place I photographed beautiful museum quality sculptures and carvings created by WWI soldiers a century ago. They are currently unprotected and unknown. After capturing this photograph on that first day underground I knew that I had stumbled on to a big story and committed then and there to return to France to find and photograph the Hidden Worlds of WWI underground.
