Hunting Season

Amur River

I’m on assignment with National Geographic Magazine on the banks Amur River, three kilometers wide, the natural border which separates two giants, China and Russia. I’ve just spent part of the winter in this region, wandering from one bank to the other. The cold freezes my mustache and my film – it is a major challenge to work at –40º C! I followed the Oroqen tribe, who are fabled to be the origin of japanese people and are thought to have migrated to Siberia thousands of years ago.

The Oroqen are a tribe of hunters on horseback who like to track their prey in the winter when the plains are covered with frozen snow, since that enables them to hear the footsteps of wild animals.
