It’s time to celebrate ‪#‎TrilobiteTuesday! Today, we look at one of the last trilobites to exist, Ameura major, a 3 cm-long specimen collected in Missouri. This species lived approximately 260 million years ago, near the end of the Permian, the last period of the Paleozoic era. The end of the Permian signaled the end of trilobites, along with approximately 80 percent of life on earth. That event stands as the largest mass extinction in the history of our planet, even more severe than the mass extinction that some 200 million years later, would eradicate non-avian dinosaurs.
