Photo by @ChrisBickford @National Geographic Travel: A passing storm behind and a late-afternoon break in the clouds in front light up the sandstone exterior of Nashville's Union Station Hotel, a fin-de-siecle masterpiece of Richardsonian-Romanesque architecture. The Union hearkens back to the days when folks dressed in their Sunday best to ride the train, and rail travel was the most advanced means of transportation known to man. The age of the railroads has come and gone for the most part, but walking through buildings such as this one -- now converted into an opulent hotel and event space -- one can almost feel the excitement of travelers of yore, standing on the platform of the modern age, but still swathed in the trappings of a historical era that has long been lost to us. Heading west into a wild and mysterious frontier, carrying trunks full of the relics of a millennium of European civilization.
