An african wild dog pup cautiously leaves the protection of its den. We had the rare privilege of seeing a litter of seventeen 6 week old pups at their den site near the Ngala Safari Lodge. Wild dogs are usually on the move over a very large range. However, after a litter is born, they will limit their traveling and hunting to areas closer to the den. They will return to their nomadic way of life when the pups reach 10-12 weeks of age. The day we were able to see them, the pups were left alone for the first time while the pack was out to hunt. The pups ventured out every so often, but spent most of the time in the den until the pack returned to feed them. Once the adults arrived, the pups came out in a full display of energy and curiosity.
