Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Photographed two days ago on the former WWI front line in the Somme, France. Ninety nine years ago, the battle of the Somme, one of WWI’s fiercest battles, was raging on this very spot. This bicycle is located on a family farm on whose property can still be found an original German WWI underground bunker. There are so many threads of connection between then and now. Several hours after taking this photograph I had the privilege of leading a television crew from Reuters underground on a TV news exclusive that will break later this week regarding some recent WWI discoveries in a series of caves on the Somme. Located in a small village, these caves hold the largest number of Canadian WWI soldiers’ hand-written inscriptions on the Western Front. Many of these young men would die in battle shortly after recording their names, serial numbers, home towns, unit numbers and occasional notes and humor on the stone walls of these caves. This site is also the second largest repository of British WWI soldiers’ inscriptions in existence. These caves were also the likely birthplace of JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and “Middle Earth”. Tolkien was here as a British WWI soldier multiple times during the summer of 1916. A few minutes walk from the caves, in the village cemetery, is buried one of the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton’s great uncles who died during WWI.
