Photograph by @remibenali. From a #storytelling about the Sahara this month on my feed. Mohamed at the time was coming back from Nouakchott, the capital city of Mauritania. After opening a successful spare parts business, he decided to return to his city of Chinguetti by choice and he spoke with conviction: "Nouakchott inexorably attracts Mauritanians who leave their villages, dreaming about the convenience of the modern life. But that is just a mirage, jobs are rare and poorly paid, the city is swelling with frustrations and poverty. Material comfort will never replace spiritual happiness." It is impossible at this point for me to not think about the African families who are crossing today the Sahara and would nearly swim the Mediterranean Sea to try a chance in Europe. What would they find there? A life in a poorly built suburb not different from that in Nouakchott but encircled by a xenophobic society... In his traditional clothes, in his stones city, among his ancient manuscripts, Mohamed was beautiful and appeared to me like a little Prince. "But the eyes are blind. One must look with the heart."
