Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Like a note in a bottle that washes up on shore after a century, WWI soldiers from both sides of the conflict inscribed their names in stone not knowing if anyone would ever see them. These notes to the future at times include home addresses, unit numbers, and notes that range from humor to despair. For the past century, these inscriptions have been hidden in complete darkness, deep underground in various places near the trenches of the former front line of the Western Front. This note is from MJ Maloney, 35 Wave Avenue, Wakefield Massachusetts dated February 22nd, 1918. On Google Street View, you can see this soldier‘s home street as if it was yesterday. As human beings, we all want to feel that our lives matter. We all want to be known. I’ve been privileged to photograph upwards of 4,000 WWI soldiers names. It’s an emotional experience to be in complete darkness except for your headlamp and find these soldiers’ inscriptions that may have not been seen by another human being for a century. It feels like the soldiers are speaking to future generations saying “I was here. I once lived. I was a living breathing human being”. Many of these young men would die in war soon after they recorded their names. To view more of my photographs of The Hidden World of WWI, please visit @hiddenwwi.
