As he prepares to become the second person to host “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert is approaching a transformative moment. In the new role, #Colbert will succeed @letterman, for whom the show was created. The big question: Can he shed the ironist’s mask he wore on The Colbert Report and turn himself into the genial master of ceremonies that a late-night network show requires? Colbert is keeping many details about his show il under wraps until its debut. But one afternoon in August, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reporter Dave Itzkoff listened in as Colbert and his staff contemplated the language he should use to open a sketch that began with a direct address to the audience. (An opening greeting like “nation” was too reminiscent of his former character’s voice.) Colbert hit upon a solution. “How about ‘hi’?” he said. “I like that.” @damonwinter photographed Colbert on the roof of the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York.
