Today at #OurOcean2015, Chile has created the largest no-take marine reserve in the Americas around the Desventuradas Islands. I led a @ナショナルジオグラフィック #PristineSeas expedition to these remote Chilean rocky specks in the south Pacific in February 2013, in collaboration with @Oceana. As soon as we jumped in, we were struck by its healthy underwater environment. We discovered species of fish new to science, untouched deep populations of dwarf lobsters, giant Juan Fernandez lobsters, kelp forests, a relict population of the once thought extinct Juan Fernandez fur seal, abundant fish populations, and deep sea mountains harboring fragile corals.
