Corals are in the hotspot—literally. Warmer ocean temperatures and an El Nino year are ingredients for a massive coral bleaching event. In this photo, you can see bleached Fungia scutaria. But our scientists are trying to save corals before it's too late. "We are working with researchers around the world to cryopreserve coral," says Dr. Mary Hagedorn. "In our bio-repositories coral sperm and their life-giving Symbiodinium remain safely frozen—but alive—for years. Although much research is still needed, it gives us hope that we may use this material to help shrinking populations affected by bleaching and disease today, and potentially reseed reefs once climate change has been addressed." #WeSaveSpecies
