"The photo studio at Sundance is a little bit like an assembly line. Casts of every film have appointments from one studio to the next all day long. I imagine for the talent it starts to feel like Groundhog Day. For the me, each group of cast members that come through give me a chance to experiment. I start with a pretty traditional portrait to be safe and then move on to something else. #JamesMarsden, who has come by in past years arrived and was ready to shoot, but also willing to experiment. After shooting some nice digital portraits and a tintype, we decided to shift the light. In this image we cut the light with a black flag very close to the frame. It took several tries to not create a distracting shadow that fell on James’ cheek. But eventually we dialed it in. I’m always grateful for a subject who is willing to go the extra step to make something different. I loved the light so much that I have taken it and continued to build on it."
