Had productive meetings at the #APEC Summit in Manila over the past two days. First the leaders of the Trans-Pacific Partnership countries met, “on the sidelines” of the summit. This was our first meeting since negotiations concluded in October.
The #TPP will be a game-changer for the Asia-Pacific. It will open up trade and investment opportunities for our businesses and create good jobs for Singaporeans. We hope to have the TPP in force within two years.
The APEC agenda included cultivating sustainable, resilient communities. Like many other APEC economies, Singapore has an ageing population. I shared with the leaders what we are doing to become more age-friendly. But increased longevity also brings opportunities for seniors to achieve their life goals, and to keep contributing to society. If we plan ahead, an ageing population can be a positive force for social and economic development.
