For millennia, the Haida have been interwoven with this stunning environment. Thanks to their deep connection to the land, in 1985 the Haida nation joined an effort to stop logging in the area now called Gwaii Haanas. The standoff - championed by the Haida - led to a consensus-based decision making model between the Government of Canada and the Council of the Haida Nation to protect the ecological and cultural heritage of Gwaii Haanas for future generations.
