A silhouette of a young cheetah as he sits on a ridge in the morning light. We went to this spot before sunrise hoping to see cheetah or lion in this type of light and got lucky. This cheetah and his two siblings didn't sit around too long and were off to hunt at first light. Starting on Friday, November 27, Nat Geo WILD will present a week dedicated to nature’s fiercest felines—big cats—creatures of magnificent strength, ferocity and beauty that are rapidly facing extinction. Populations of lions, tigers, cheetahs, leopards, jaguars, and other top felines are declining at an alarming rate. They are victims of habitat loss and degradation as well as conflicts with humans. More than a television event Big Cat Week is an extension of the Big Cats Initiative, a long-term commitment by the National Geographic Society to stop poaching, save habitat and sound the call that big steps are needed to save big cats around the world. This global initiative actively supports on-the-ground conservation projects and education to help stem and eventually reverse the rapid disappearance of big cat populations.
All that week, I will be posting Big Cat images here and on my account at @andywcoleman #bigcatweek #bigcats @natgeocreative
