Bearing Witness ~ The Refugee Crisis

September 20, 2014 ~ Just over a year ago, I came across the Milhlie family sitting in a barren field along the side of a road in Dikmetas, Turkey.

Huddling around a fire, they burned scrap paper and plastics collected with other refugees, brewing tea in a dented kettle, nibbling on biscuit type cookies, each taking turns to stay warm as evening enveloped.

A few hours early they had crossed by foot over invisible lines -- borders. Now in quiet repose, they feasted upon the only items they had time to grab before fleeing their home in Kobani, Syria, before the arrival of IS.

Cold, unknowing where to go, radiating from each was utter humility. Thankfulness of finding safety. Being alive.

On this day of Thanksgiving in the United States, I thought of the Milhlie's and their welcoming kindness to a complete stranger, offering me all they had to give; A deliciously warm cup of chai, a buttermilk biscuit.

This photograph is part of my multi-week series, #BearingWitnesstheRefugeeCrisis, delving deep into my archive of more than 20 years documenting forced migration based upon war, conflict, poverty and oppression around the world.
The events we are witnessing throughout Europe and beyond have haunted humanity for centuries. Today we are seeing the largest mass migration since World War II, the desperate act of tens of thousands fleeing war and oppression.
