This 1930s toy kitchen set includes an ice box, an appliance that was used less and less as the decade went on, thanks to the electric refrigerator. Ice boxes were usually made of wood lined with tin or zinc and contained a large block of ice to keep perishable foods cold.
But refrigerators proved more reliable, maintaining consistent temperatures and keeping food fresh longer—making it a safer and more cost-effective way to preserve food.
